The In-Between
by Micah Josiah
There’s a place that seems to be no place
between this moment and that promised destination.
We get anxious, we get annoyed;
in our minds we should be there, not here,
but in our hearts there’s a voice that whispers:
“It’s not time yet. There is something that happens in the in-between
that cannot happen once you leave.”
Transformation happens in transit
it happens in the decimals and dashes of indecision;
it happens in the colons, the commas,
the rest of unaltered breath.
Races are won by the fastest;
marathons are won by the practiced.
Learn from the flowers, learn from the trees.
Did you watch the seed becoming a sprout;
the sprout becoming the tree;
the tree becoming the outstretched arms that stroke the heavens,
and drink the sun like lemonade,
and splash the sky like infinite waves
to shape the gold crested horizon?
Growth happens in the in-between,
in moments we cannot perceive.
We feel blinded,
but darkness is required.
Every tree was first buried in deep dark soil,
hidden from sight, before ever experiencing
the beautiful light
above it all.
